toxoplasmosis: A disease caused by parasites often found in cat feces, soil and raw and undercooked meat. Can damage the fetus or placenta.

trimester: A pregnancy is divided into three-month periods called trimesters.

ultrasound: High-frequency sound waves used to examine the fetus and the mother's internal organs.

umbilical cord: A cord carrying nutrients, blood and oxygen to the fetus from the placenta.

vagina: Muscular opening in the woman extending from the vulva to the cervix of the uterus. Called the vaginal canal during delivery.

varicose veins: Veins swollen and stretched due to blood flow.

weaning: The process of ending milk as a baby's sole source of nutrition and introducing solid foods.
