fallopian tubes: The two narrow tubes on both sides of the uterus that connect the uterus to the ovaries.

false labor: Regular, strong contractions that do not dilate the cervix.

fetus: The name for the baby between the eighth week of pregnancy and delivery.

folic acid: A vitamin required for red blood cell production. Found in green leafy vegetables, dried beans, kidneys and liver. Folic acid is important for proper fetal development.

gastrointestinal: Of or relating to the stomach and intestinal tract.

GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that occurs when stomach acid passes into the esophagus, causing heartburn symptoms. GERD is quite common during pregnancy.

gestation: The length of the pregnancy from conception to delivery. Humans have an average gestation period of nine months.

gestational diabetes: A form of diabetes that can appear during pregnancy and that may or may not persist after pregnancy.

gynecology: The field of medicine dealing with the diseases and care of the female reproductive system.

hCG: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone found in the urine and blood of pregnant women. Its presence is often used to test for pregnancy.

hemorrhoids: Painful, enlarged veins in the anus or rectum, caused by constipation or straining.

hormone: A cellular product required for a variety of cellular processes.

hyperemesis gravidarum: Severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. More severe than normal morning sickness and can cause dehydration.

incontinence: The inability to control bladder or bowel excretions. Urinary incontinence may occur when the developing fetus puts pressure on the bladder.

induction: Artificially starting labor, either through medication or the rupture of membranes.
